HCES: HCES is Manhattan 2020 Project
I donated pro bono work on this project for Hunter College Elementary School. The lead in charge of the project asked me to use children's art to create the shape of Manhattan. The children were encouraged to write their names in a creative way using black marker and to make drawings representing things you might find on a map of Manhattan. Two classes participated, so I chose to represent one with warm-tone and one with cool-tone colors. I used Photoshop to change the color of each child's name to a variation on a warm red/purple or cool blue/green color (depending on the class) and then I arranged the names to create the shape of Manhattan. This Manhattan art was used to create tote bags, hoodies, mugs, throw pillows, and a framed poster. Since the bag and pillows had two sides, I decided to use the phrase "Hunter is Manhattan" for this additional art, to reflect that at this school the students come from all areas of Manhattan. I used letters taken from the names and drew additional numbers in the same style to make up the final phrase "Hunter is Manhattan 2020" for use on the 2nd side of the bags and pillows. These items were sold as fundraising items for the school.
